Today the children in Upper School tested different materials to see if they dissolved in cold water. They learnt the words soluble and insoluble to describe their observations. They were given sand, cocoa, flour, salt, sugar, coffee, gravy granules and rice to experiment with.
Some of the results were surprising to the children as they expected gravy to be soluble when it wasn’t! Flour looked like it had dissolved however they realised when they stopped stirring it that the water had lumps at the bottom again.

Next week the children will plan and carry out their own experiment around the theme of soluble and insoluble. They will need to come up with a question to test and decide a suitable way of testing their idea.
